Dr. Baumgarten

Dr. Keith Baumgarten

  • Title
Head Team Physician | Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Baumgarten is fellowship-trained in sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery. He is the first South Dakota physician to be elected to the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society. In addition, he was the first fellowship-trained hip arthroscopy specialist to care for patients with hip pain in South Dakota.

Dr. Baumgarten served as an Associate Physician with the New York Mets baseball team while completing his fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. During residency, he trained with the team physicians of the St. Louis Rams, Blues, and Cardinals sports teams and is the current Head Team Physician for the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Sioux Falls Canaries.

Dr. Baumgarten is passionate about improving the quality of orthopedic and musculoskeletal care. He feels that by performing both basic science and clinical research, he can potentially help millions of people improve the quality of their lives, in addition to the patients that he sees here at the Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Baumgarten has been presented with the Charles S. Neer Award in 2011 and 2013 for the best shoulder research performed that year, and the O’Donoghue Award in 2014 for his research on ACL injuries. He is quoted in an in-depth article by ESPN on Human Growth Hormone. A very interesting read for anyone, from athletes to farmers, who are trying to recover more quickly.

In 2021, Dr. Baumgarten became the first surgeon in South Dakota to use an innovative new solution for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, BEAR, short for Bridge-enhanced ACL Repair, is a new method of repairing ACLs. The implant, combined with the patient’s blood, enables the body to heal the torn ends of the ACL.

Watch this video to hear Dr. Baumgarten explain the BEAR procedure. In this video, Carissa Judge, a patient of Orthopedic Surgeon Keith Baumgarten, MD, provides a testimonial about her BEAR ACL repair and rehabilitation.

While he is involved in many clinical trials and patent submissions, his most recent clinical study is titled Comparison Of A Novel Sling With A Traditional Abduction Sling After Shoulder Surgery

The study aims to determine if the patent-pending novel shoulder sling has higher patient satisfaction than a traditional abduction sling with at least equivalent postoperative outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and total shoulder arthroplasty.

When Dr. Baumgarten isn’t caring for his patients or on the sideline helping athletes, he can be found participating in sports, playing and listening to music with his children, reading, and spending time with his family.
