SIOUX FALLS, S.D.— The Sioux Falls Stampede pulled out a shootout win against the Lincoln Stars on Friday night, 3-2.
Jaksen Panzer and
Beckett Hendrickson earned goals during the regulation period with
JJ Wiebusch pulling home the win in the third round of the shootout.
One goal and three penalties were all the first period had to offer, but the Stampede emerged on top.
Jaksen Panzer found a powerplay goal 5:46 into the period on a one-timer, assisted by
JJ Wiebusch. The Stampede went one-for-two on its first period powerplay opportunities, while the Stars were unable to find the net during their one opportunity.
Starting off the second period,
Beckett Hendrickson added his third goal of the season to the Herd's scoreboard. Tucking the puck under the crossbar 1:46 into the period, Hendrickson's goal was assisted by the team's pair of Quinnipiac commits,
Tyler Borgula and
Chris Pelosi. The Stampede added an additional 12 shots on goal to their 12 from the first period while the Stars marked 11 over the two frames. With four penalties in the second period, only two produced powerplay opportunities for either team. The Stars found themselves an opportunity 13:12 into the period, an opportunity that was cut short by a Stars penalty at 13:30. The Stampede then had its own 18 second powerplay but wasn't able to act on it.
The Stars were able to roll a goal in behind netminder
Michael Chambre 6:38 into the final period, making the scoreboard 2-1 in favor of the Herd. With 4:02 left in the period, Lincoln found a second goal, tying it up at two goals for each team. With no more changes to the board, the game was sent into the three-on-three overtime period.
With nothing happening in the overtime period, the game was forced into the shootout. Starting off, Lincoln's Jack Pechar was unable to snipe one past Chambre and the Stampede's
Micah Berger couldn't find the back of Yan Shostak's. The next round ended in a similar fashion with Lincoln's Jared Mangan and the Stampede's
Chris Pelosi unable to finish it. It all came down to the final pairing of Juan Copeland and
JJ Wiebusch. After Copeland's shot was denied by Chambre, Wiebusch found himself at center ice. After skating out to his far left, Wiebusch cut back in to go head-on against Shostak. After lining up, he found his shot soaring past Shostak's right shoulder and into the net, winning the game for the Herd.
Between the pipes for the Stampede,
Michael Chambre went 46:38 without allowing a puck in. His fourth win this season, Chambre tallied a .909 save percentage and 1.85 goals-against average. Moving to 4-1-1 this season, he now holds a 2.79 goals-against average and .888 save percentage overall.
