Sioux Falls, S.D. – Sioux Falls Stampede forward
Reid Varkonyi and defenseman
Filip Nordberg have been named the United States Hockey League (USHL) Forward and Defenseman of the Week, respectively.
Varkonyi earned the title after recording six points in the Stampede's two-game series against the Green Bay Gamblers. On Friday night, he notched the primary assist on both of the Stampede's goals. He elevated his performance on Saturday, tallying his first career USHL hat trick along with an assist to lead the Stampede to a 9-2 victory over the Gamblers. The Sherwood Park, Alberta, native tied the game with a quick wrister at 7:38 of the first period. His second goal came on the power play, cleaning up a rebound in front to give the Stampede a 7-1 lead. He capped the night with another power play goal—with a similar shot as his first—to complete the hat trick and seal the win.
Varkonyi is currently tied for second on the team in points with 49 (18 goals, 31 assists). He also ranks second among his teammates in both goals and assists. Additionally, the University of Denver commit ranks in the top five in plus-minus with a +16 rating and has been a key contributor on the power play with five goals and six assists.
Filip Nordberg earned his second Defenseman of the Week honor after a four-point weekend in Green Bay. He recorded a secondary assist on Friday's opening goal before scoring a goal of his own in the second period with a quick shot from the left faceoff dot. The Ottawa Senators draft pick followed that with a two-assist performance on Saturday. His first was a secondary assist on
Ben Wilmott's goal at 9:41 of the first period, and his second was a well-timed pass up the ice to
Austin Baker for the team's sixth goal of the night.
The Stockholm, Sweden, native ranks third on the team in plus-minus and is among the top twenty USHL defensemen in the same category. He also ranks third among Stampede defensemen in both assists and points. Nordberg last received Defenseman of the Week honors on March 10th.
