CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA – The Sioux Falls Stampede triumphed over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Friday afternoon in the Fall Classic, led by a hat trick from
Sam Harris and a shutout from
Jackson Irving in a dominant 8-0 victory.
Ryan Gordon tallied a goal and two assists while
Noah Andersson put up two assists and Irving stopped all 27 shots faced between the pipes.
The Herd got things rolling early in the first period, similar to yesterday afternoon's start. On the power play,
Will McDonough was perfectly positioned at the left circle to knock in a rebounded
Michael LaStarza shot just 2:54 into the game. A little over three minutes later, Harris stuffed in a puck at the right side of the net for the Herd's second power play goal of the night.
At 12:51 in the period, Harris tallied his second goal of the night off of a breakaway, taking a long pass from
Clint Levens.
Owen Benoit had the final goal of the first period, firing a shot from the left circle for his first career USHL goal. Sioux Falls outshot Cedar Rapids 18-6 in the period.
A scoreless second saw the Stampede outshot by the RoughRiders 11-8, but the Herd came out swinging in the final twenty minutes of play. At 8:26 into the third period,
Jaksen Panzer took a pass from
Nick Ring as they charged down the ice on the penalty kill and fired a shorthanded wrister past the RoughRiders netminder. A little over two minutes later, a crowded crease resulted in Gordon jamming the puck into the net to give the Stampede a 6-0 lead.
The Herd managed to pack two more goals into the final minute of play. Harris tallied his third for a hat trick with 51 seconds on the clock with help from Gordon, while
Zack Sharp's snipe from the left circle with 21 seconds remaining gave the Stampede the 8-0 lead. They would go on to hold that lead for the final seconds of the game.
The Stampede outshot the RoughRiders 11-10 in the final frame and 37-27 in the game. Sioux Falls went 2-for-5 on the power play and 9-for-9 on the penalty kill.
This was the final game for the Herd at the Fall Classic. They head to Lincoln next weekend to take on the Stars at 7:05 PM Saturday, September 30th.
