Men's Ice Hockey By Stampede

Herd spooked by Phantoms on night one

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO— The Sioux Falls Stampede fell to the Youngstown Phantoms, 4-3, in game one of the two-game road series on Friday. Beckett Hendrickson and John McNelis each added a goal to their records while Hayden Reid found his first USHL goal.

Youngstown found twine first 9:32 into the first period, sitting one goal up for just three minutes before the Stampede's Beckett Hendrickson found his second of the season. On the powerplay, Hendrickson's goal came off assists from Chris Pelosi and Kaz Sobieski. The Phantoms were able to net one more goal with 10 seconds to play in the period, setting the scoreboard at 2-1 in favor of Youngstown heading into the second.

The second period started similarly to the first with Youngstown scoring first and going up 3-1 at the 6:38 mark. Just 19 seconds later, John McNelis found the third goal of his career with help from Egor Barabanov and Jack Phelan. Youngstown would go on to score one more goal before the second intermission.

The last period saw a different struggle for both teams when the layer of fog in the arena posed a bit of a visual problem for both teams. Nonetheless, the Herd's Hayden Reid was able to add one more tally to the Stampede's scoreboard, his first of his USHL career. Assisted by Gennadi Chaly, Reid's goal would be the last change to the scoreboard and leave the Stampede with the 4-3 loss.

A high-shooting game for both teams, the Herd went 34-for-37 in shots on goal with the Phantoms hitting 29-of-33. Michael Chambre earned the start between the pipes for the Herd, earning a .879 save percentage and 4.18 goals-against average.

The Stampede and Phantoms will be back in action at 6 p.m. central tomorrow evening to close out the first Stampede/Phantom series since 2019.

Following this weekend, the Herd will be back in Sioux Falls to start the November stretch of nine home games and one away game. They'll kick off the month with Humane Society Game Night, presented by Tito's Vodka, on Friday, November 3rd at 7:05 p.m. versus the Lincoln Stars. This will be the first meeting for these two teams of the 2023-24 season. They'll then host the Fargo Force for the MOOvember celebration on Saturday, Nov. 4th at 6:05 p.m. Tickets for all Stampede home games are available now through the KELOLAND box office, Stampede office, or any Ticketmaster outlets.
