DALLAS, TEXAS— The Sioux Falls Stampede pulled out an overtime win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints in game one of the USHL Frosty Cup at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. The Herd took the win, 4-3, with two goals from Jaksen Panzer and one each from Tyler Borgula and Beckett Hendrickson. Michael Chambre earned his 14th win of the season between the pipes for the Stampede.
Jaksen Panzer kicked things off with an unassisted goal just 2:22 into the first frame of the night. Setting the team up 1-0, around 12 minutes would pass until Tyler Borgula added to the Stampede's lead with some help from John McNelis. One minute later, Dubuque bounced back and took the Herd's lead down to one goal. Finishing out the period, the Fighting Saints found one more goal, tying it up at two goals per team.
The Herd reclaimed the lead early in the second period, with Beckett Hendrickson finding the third goal for the Stampede, assisted by Chris Pelosi and Joe Belisle. The rest of the period would see just one penalty, called on the Herd's Alex Rybakov for tripping, but the Fighting Saints were unable to find the back of the net on this advantage.
The Herd found itself in trouble with the officials a couple of times in the third period, starting with defenseman Jack Phelan for throwing his stick at the puck while in the defensive zone, causing a penalty shot attempt from Dubuque. Michael Chambre stopped the shot from Noah Powell, keeping the Herd's lead. Rounding out regulation, Dubuque tied the game back up with their third goal of the night, the second for Noah Powell, with 13:54 expired from the clock. This would ultimately be the goal that sent the two teams into an overtime period.
The Stampede opened the overtime period on a penalty kill, with Jake Toll stuck in the penalty box for 24 seconds. Due to this, the typically three-on-three period was started with four-on-three, the advantage going to Dubuque. The Herd killed off its second penalty kill of the night and Jaksen Panzer went on to score the game-winning goal just 11 seconds later, with assists to Toll and Artur Cholach.
Between the pipes, the now 14-6-1-1 goaltender Michael Chambre stopped 34 total shots from finding the back of his net. He allowed three goals in the 60:35 minutes, adding up to a 2.97 goals-against average. Chambre's .921 save percentage moves his season total to .889. The 35 saves earned Chambre his third highest saving game of the season.
The Herd and Fighting Saints now head to downtown Dallas to play at the American Airlines Center for game two on Friday night. Following this week, the Herd is back in Sioux Falls on Tuesday to kick off a three-game week at the PREMIER Center.
