Penalty trouble in the third leads to Stampede loss

SIOUX CITY, IOWA— The Sioux Falls Stampede and Sioux City Musketeers battled through all three periods of their mid-week matchup in Sioux City, Iowa. The Herd fell to the Musketeers, 6-4 after leading or being tied most of the game. Tallying goals for the Herd were Chase LaPinta, Chris Pelosi, Egor Barabanov and Hunter Anderson, while Christian Manz found the start between the pipes.

The Herd came out strong in the first period with Chase LaPinta finding his seventh goal in five games just over a quarter of the way through the period. The goal also gave LaPinta's linemates Chris Pelosi and JJ Wiebusch their 30th and 31st assists of the season, respectively. Sioux City would answer back just over three minutes later, but the Herd fought hard to get a second goal and take back the lead at the 10:44 mark. Pelosi and LaPinta switched places on this goal with Pelosi marking his 19th of the season and LaPinta his 24th assist, along with Wiebusch earning the second assist. The Herd led 2-1 going into the middle frame.

Aside from starting the second period on the powerplay, then losing the advantage 22 seconds in due to an interference call on Chase LaPinta, the Herd did not see much movement to its side of the scoreboard. The Musketeers were able to add one tally to their side with 7:28 expired from the clock, tying the game at two heading towards the last period.

Egor Barabanov marked his first goal since November exactly five minutes into the third period, taking back the Herd's lead with helpers from Hayden Reid and Grant Dillard. Hunter Anderson then added to the lead in dramatic fashion. A pass from Jaksen Panzer found the face of a Musketeer, bounced loose and finally led to Tyler Borgula snapping a quick pass to Anderson who found the back of the net. Around this time is when a mess of events led to the Herd's demise. Sioux City would mark an even-strength goal, then earn a penalty shot and a powerplay due to Gennadi Chaly being served a playing with a broken stick penalty and Alex Rybakov a tripping penalty. Sioux City's Ethan Gardula marked the penalty shot goal while Kaden Shahan earned the game-winning, powerplay goal. Sealing the deal for the Musketeers, Ty Hanson slid the empty net goal.

Christian Manz was marked with his first loss in a Stampede jersey, now holding a 10-10-1-1 record this season. Manz faced 31 shots on his net and was able to stop 26 in his 58 minutes and 34 seconds between the pipes. He marked a .839 save percentage and 5.12 goals-against average. Manz's season goals-against average is now 4.50 and save percentage is .876.

The team will head to Omaha on Friday before hosting the Lancers on Mar. 17 for Stomp's Birthday Bash. Keeping the action in Sioux Falls the following weekend, the Herd hosts the Lincoln Stars on Saturday, Mar. 23. Tickets for the Herd's remaining games are available at the Stampede office, KELOLAND box office and Ticketmaster.
