MIDDLETON, WISC.— The Sioux Falls Stampede bounced back from a three-goal deficit to claim a 6-4 win over the Madison Capitols on Friday night. The Stampede was led by newcomer
Chase LaPinta who tallied two goals and two assists, followed by
JJ Wiebusch and
Tyler Borgula who each marked a goal and two assists. Also marking goals were
Chris Pelosi and
Hunter Anderson.
Christian Manz earned his second win in the blue and gold with 26 saves.
The game didn't look pretty for the Herd starting out. Unable to find the net in the first period, the Herd had to work with a one-goal deficit after the initial frame. Early in the second, a powerplay opportunity for the Stampede gave
Chase LaPinta the advantage he needed to bury the puck behind goaltender Patriks Berzins and tie the game. Unfortunately for the Stampede, the Capitols would score two more before the end of the second period, the Stampede now working with a two-goal deficit.
Spirits dropped just 2:15 into the third when Madison increased its lead to three goals. Set on not allowing the Herd to be counted out just yet,
Chase LaPinta scored his second one of the night with helpers from
Tyler Borgula and
JJ Wiebusch. After almost 10 minutes of no change to the scoreboard, the Herd opened the floodgates when
Tyler Borgula netted his own goal, unassisted with 13:40 expired. Just a minute and four seconds later,
Chris Pelosi found the game-tying goal with help from Wiebusch and LaPinta. The spark for the Herd was proven to be back when
Hunter Anderson tallied the game-winning goal with under three minutes remaining. Hitting the nail into the coffin of Madison's hopes for a win, Wiebusch tallied his own goal on an empty net, making it 6-4 in favor of the Herd.
The Herd was able to, relatively, stay out of penalty trouble throughout the game. The only infractions came from
Matthew Grimes and
Artur Cholach in the first and second periods, respectively. On the opposite side of the ice, the Herd was able to earn a free powerplay when Madison fans continued to throw items on the ice, resulting in a delay of game minor for the Madison bench.
Christian Manz showed the Herd why picking him up on a trade with Chicago two weeks ago was a great decision. Manz earned his second win of his Stampede career and now holds a season record of 10-9-1-1 this season with 43-22-4-3 during his three-year career. He stopped 26-of-30 pucks from entering his net for a .867 save percentage. His 4.00 goals-against average on the evening moved his season GAA to 4.47 and save percentage to .878.
The Herd and Capitols meet again Saturday evening before the Herd heads back to the Western Conference. The team will head to Sioux City and Omaha next week before hosting Omaha on Mar. 17 for Stomp's Birthday Bash. Tickets for the Herd's remaining games are available at the Stampede office, KELOLAND box office and Ticketmaster.
