MIDDLETON, WISC.— The Sioux Falls Stampede battled back from a deficit for the second night in a row against the Madison Capitols, but was unable to claim the overtime win, falling 3-2. The team earned three points in USHL standings during the weekend with its win on Friday.
John McNelis and
Chase LaPinta each put goals on the scoreboard with
Michael Chambre being marked with the overtime loss.
Similar to the previous night, the Herd was unable to find the back of the net in the first period. Austin Burnevik, who scored the Capitol's first goal, added to Madison's lead in the second period on a powerplay caused by
Artur Cholach being called for hooking.
John McNelis closed the gap with his own goal, assisted by
Matthew Grimes, with just 1:03 remaining in the center frame.
The Herd started to pick itself up in the third period. Though the majority of the period was uneventful, with the exception of a high-sticking call on Madison which sent the Herd to a powerplay, a timeout is exactly what the Stampede needed to draw up a game-tying play. After Head Coach
Eric Rud called a timeout with just over three minutes remaining, the Herd was able to pull goaltender
Michael Chambre and capitalize on the man advantage. With 2:50 remaining on the clock,
Chase LaPinta found his shot hitting the back of Madison's net. This sent the game into overtime. The Herd and Capitols were able to battle through two minutes of overtime before the Capitols sniped the puck past Chambre, earning the 3-2 win.
Michael Chambre's start in net moved his season record to 16-11-3-1, his three-season career record sitting at 23-23-3-1. Chambre marked one of the lowest goals-against averages of his season with 1.94 goals against in his 62 minutes. He was able to stop 20-of-22 pucks for a .909 save percentage. This season, Chambre has averaged 3.60 goals against and a .875 save percentage in 34 games.
The team will head to Sioux City and Omaha next week before hosting Omaha on Mar. 17 for Stomp's Birthday Bash. Keeping the action in Sioux Falls the following weekend, the Herd hosts the Lincoln Stars on Saturday, Mar. 23. Tickets for the Herd's remaining games are available at the Stampede office, KELOLAND box office and Ticketmaster.
