Sioux Falls, S.D. – Sioux Falls Stampede defenseman
Filip Nordberg has been named the United States Hockey League (USHL) Defenseman of the Week.
The Swedish defenseman had a standout weekend, earning three points and recording a plus-two rating. In Saturday's 2-1 win over the Sioux City Musketeers, Nordberg netted the team's first goal with a one-timer just outside the low slot. He followed it up with a primary assist on the eventual game-winner by
Gennadi Chaly. Against the Omaha Lancers on Sunday, the Ottawa Senators prospect scored the game-winning goal in the second period with a snipe from the slot. The goal marked Nordberg's fifth of the season and earned him a three point weekend.
For much of the season, the 6'5", 2004-born defenseman has led the Stampede in penalty minutes, accumulating 80. He currently ranks in the top 20 among USHL skaters in +/- rating and top 10 among defensemen with a +18 rating.
Nordberg is in his second full season in the USHL. He spent last season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks before being acquired by the Stampede via trade this offseason.
Nordberg and the Stampede return to home ice this weekend to host the Youngstown Phantoms. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. for Hockey Talks Night, presented by Fight Like A Ninja and Two Men and A Truck. The series will wrap up on Saturday night with Stomp's Birthday Bash. Tickets for both games are available by calling the Stampede office at 605-275-4625.
