Herd struggles against Omaha, looks to bounce back Saturday

OMAHA, NEB.— The Sioux Falls Stampede was defeated by the Omaha Lancers, 6-2, on Friday evening. Goals from Micah Berger and JJ Wiebusch weren't enough to propel the Herd past the Lancers as they now move to 8-6-1 this season and prepare to host the Lancers on Saturday.

Stampede forward, Micah Berger, started the game strong with a powerplay goal just 3:07 into the first period. Assisted by Tyler Borgula and Jack Phelan, Berger's goal was his first of his United States Hockey League career. The Lancers tied the game up 3:34 later, also on a powerplay, sending the game tied up into the second period.

Omaha broke through the gates swinging in the second period. Scoring four goals in the period, the Lancers increased their two-period total to five goals. The Herd was able to add its own goal when JJ Wiebusch netted his sixth goal of the season at the 9:25 mark, assisted by Beckett Hendrickson. Followed by three of Omaha's four goals, the Stampede ended the period down 5-2.

The Stampede opened the third period on a rough note when starting left defenseman Artur Cholach was sent to the penalty box 23 seconds in. The Herd was able to kill off the early penalty then flipped the script and went onto the powerplay after John McNelis drew a boarding call on the Lancers' Ethan Fredericks. This powerplay didn't last long as the Herd's Beckett Hendrickson was called for a double-minor, high-sticking penalty. On this powerplay, Omaha was able to increase its lead to 6-2 with 13:12 left in the game. After a virtually uneventful rest of the period, the Stampede was unable to close the gap on the Lancers and ultimately fell, 6-2.

Michael Chambre was tabbed with the loss for the Stampede after allowing six goals. The Boston University commit was able to stop 19 shots from entering his net, but was unable to add a tally to his win column. Chambre is now 4-2-1 this season with a save percentage of .874 and goals-against average of 3.30.

The team hosts the Lancers tomorrow for the annual Military Appreciation Night. More info about the team's Salute to Service is available on the Stampede website. Tickets for all Stampede home games are available now through the KELOLAND box office, Stampede office, or any Ticketmaster outlets.
